Friends of Harmony Minutes February 12, 200
The 6th Friends of Harmony (FOH) meeting was held at Christy K.s home in Boulder. There was a great turn out. The following topics were discussed:
INCORPORATING Bob L. volunteered to draft the articles and bylaws necessary to incorporate. Incorporating will officially make FOH a separate entity from Harmony Foundation Treatment Center. This would give FOH freedom to designate where funds will go, allowing contributions to be dispensed by FOH choice. Harmony Foundation interests should not have an effect on FOH decisions. Bob recommended FOH go forward with applying for tax-exempt status. There is less resentment and frustration with nonprofit groups and it gives FOH the ability to receive pro-bono work. Bob suggested that officers be elected at the next meeting.
RETREATS Howie M. discussed the idea of FOH renting cabins at Harmony Foundation and doing the necessary preliminary work, i.e. collecting the money and scheduling the Saturday evening dinner. He brought to discussion that Harmony Foundation is not truly a variable length stay and some students feel abandoned after completion of treatment and after care. The idea of creating a Renewal Center for this issue was discussed. A brochure from Hazleden Renewal Center was passed around to give an idea of what possibilities this holds.
SCHOLARSHIPS Don brought up the idea of setting up a fund for tuition assistance where only the interest earned would be dispensed, not the principal. Also regarding fundraising, FOH does not want to restrict the donor pool Harmony Alumni.
WEBSITE Roger K. talked about the new website (www.harmonyfoundationinc.com). There is a Message board at the alumni page to bring together the Harmony family. Encourage people to use it. Leave an inspirational message or just say hello. A second avenue of communication is creating an Alumni Corner in the quarterly Harmony newsletter. Roger also brought up the idea of a tune-up weekend for motivation and addressing more of the long-term recovery issues that arise.
RETREATS, PLANS, and ELECTIONS Meeting scheduled for Saturday, April 15th, 4:30 6:00 p.m. at the Harmony Barnes Building.
Fourth of July PICNIC Christy K. passed a sigh up sheet for volunteers for this committee. Planning meeting is scheduled for Saturday, May 6th, 4:30 6:00 p.m. at the Harmony Barnes Building.
SATURDAY SCHEDULE Jack C. announced the reformatting of the Saturday night graduation/speaker meeting. Beginning March 6th, 2000, after the prime rib dinner, the alanon and speaker meeting will be held concurrently beginning at 7:15 p.m.
BOTTOM LINE Friends of Harmony is about recovery. Following the successful functioning of Parker Valley Hope, Hazelden and Betty Fords alumni associations is an attainable goal. (All three are incorporated).
