This presentation addresses the challenges of providing addiction healthcare during a ‘triple pandemic’ and identifies the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers (NAATP’s) current initiatives toward positive systemic change. Addiction has been considered to be a public health crisis for many years and continues to worsen. A long history of systemic racism in the US has created a system wrought with disparities and inequity in access to addiction treatment and other forms of healthcare. The COVID-19 pandemic has both revealed and exacerbated this inequity. With the confluence of multiple public health crises and tragedies this year, many people are turning to substance use to manage stress, and more than ever need treatment services. The treatment providers themselves are tired, worn out, and trying to continue offering life-saving care in the midst of their own trauma exposure. NAATP has been supporting organizations that treat people with Substance Use Disorders for over 40 years. With nearly 1,000 members, NAATP is a source of guidance, community, leadership, and ethical standards for the field. NAATP is currently focused on supporting treatment providers with the information and resources they need to navigate the stressful current environment and continue their life-saving work.

Annie Peters, PhD, LP, is Director of Research and Education at the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers (NAATP), leading the national effort to further understand substance use disorders through collaborative quality improvement and research. Dr. Peters is a clinical psychologist who completed her doctorate at the University of Colorado Boulder. She has been working in the addiction treatment field since 2006, with experience in assessment, psychotherapy, process improvement, compliance, counselor education, and clinical leadership.
